Shortly after his shocking defeat of Hillary Clinton, a triumphant Donald Trump delivered his victory speech from the New York Hilton Midtown in N.Y.C.
As his family looked on proudly, Trump said, “It is time for us to come together as one united people.”
“I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans, and this is so important to me. For those who have chosen not to support me in the past — of which there were a few people — I’m reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so we can unify our great country,” he also said.\
The president-elect said Clinton called him to concede the race, and in a conciliatory note said of the former secretary of state “we owe her a major debt of gratitude.”
“I’ve just received a call from Secretary Clinton, she congratulated us, it’s about us, on our victory. And I congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard-fought campaign. She fought very hard,” he also said.
He also offered a glimpse of the work he has planned as president.
“We will begin the urgent task of rebuilding our nation and renewing the American dream,” he said. “I’ve spent my entire life in business looking at the untapped potential in projects and people all over the world. That is now what I want to do for our country.”
“No dream is too big. No challenge is too great. Nothing we want for our future is beyond reach … we must reclaim our country’s destiny and dream big and bold and daring. We have to do that. We’re going to dream of things for our country,” he said.
Trump’s running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, introduced the president-elect: “This is a historic night. The American people have spoken and the American people have elected their new champion. America has elected a new president, and its almost hard for me to express the honor that I and my family feel that we will have the privilege to serve as your vice president of the United States of America.”
The election was called early Wednesday morning after the GOP nominee earned the necessary 270 electoral votes to become president. His stunning victory rocked the world and defied the predictions of most pollsters, political pundits and correspondents.
But veteran Republican campaign adviser Lou Midkiff, who works closely with the Indiana governor, told PEOPLE the Pence campaign has been confident about a win for a week now.
“The enthusiasm you see on the road is palpable … You can cut it with a knife,” he said, adding, “Trump is a rock star when you deal with him. He can talk to anybody.”
After a tense day watching the election results from his home at Trump Tower in New York City, Trump and his family started celebrating shortly before he claimed the battleground state of Florida, a source told PEOPLE Tuesday night.
Trump shared a family photo on Twitter, captioning it, “Watching the returns at 9:45pm. #ElectionNight #MAGA.”
